Dry Eye Clinic

Dry Eye Assessment

The Optometrists at UTEC assess dry eyes using the latest diagnostic and technological advances to determine the type and severity of dry eye disease. Only after proper assessment can a patient be recommended the appropriate management and treatment protocol.

  • What is dry eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eye does not produce tears properly, or when the tears are not of the correct consistency and evaporate too quickly.

In addition, inflammation of the surface of the eye may occur along with dry eye. If left untreated, this condition can lead to pain, ulcers, or scars on the cornea, and some loss of vision. However, permanent loss of vision from dry eye is uncommon.

Dry eye can make it more difficult to perform some activities, such as using a computer or reading for an extended period of time, and it can decrease tolerance for dry environments, such as the air inside an airplane.

  • What are the types of dry eye?

    1) Aqueous tear-deficient dry eye is a disorder in which the lacrimal glands fail to produce enough of the watery component of tears to maintain a healthy eye surface.

    2) Evaporative dry eye may result from inflammation of the meibomian glands, also located in the eyelids. These glands make the lipid or oily part of tears that slows evaporation and keeps the tears stable.

    types of dry eye

  • What are the symptoms of dry eye?
    • Stinging or burning of the eye
    • Sandy or gritty feeling as if something is in the eye
    • Episodes of excess tears following very dry eye periods
    • Stringy discharge from the eye
    • Pain and redness of the eye
    • Episodes of blurred vision
    • Heavy eyelids
    • Inability to cry when emotionally stressed
    • Uncomfortable contact lenses
    • Decreased tolerance of reading, working on the computer, or any activity that requires sustained visual attention
    • Eye fatigue
  • What are the causes of dry eye?

Dry eyes can be caused by a variety of everyday factors including:

    • Aging
    • Blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids)
    • Environmental factors (pollution, weather)
    • Computer use – insufficient blinking
    • Hormonal changes
    • Refractive surgery (e.g. LASIK
    • Preservatives
    • Alcohol
    • Certain medications (speak to your eye care professional or doctor)
    • Certain systemic conditions/diseases (speak to your eye care professional or doctor)

Dry Eye Treatment

Recognizing that Dry Eye Syndrome or Dry Eye Disease is a chronic condition that requires addressing all components of the ocular surface, UTEC offers various in-office and at home therapies and treatments that are customized by the doctors for their patients’ individual needs.

MiBo Thermoflo

How Does Mibo Thermoflo Work?

The MiBo Thermoflo is a therapeutic medical device providing a safe and effective alternative therapy for dry eyes. It uses a proprietary thermoelectric heat pump to help maximize liquefaction of meibum, thus improving preservation and function of the evaporative component of the tear film.

Thermo Electric Heating

The Mibo Thermoflo supplies continuous controlled heat to the eyepad that is applied to the outer skin of the eye lids along with ultrasound gel for a gentle therpeutic massage. The heat is absorbed deep into the tissue and breaks down the hardened lipids in the meibomian glands.

Benefits:
  • Therapeutic
  • Lasting Benefits
  • Relaxing
  • Immediate Relief

Bruder Hot Compress Mask

Bruder Eye Hydrating Compresses are a natural and proven way to bring relief to dry eye syndrome, styes, chalazions, and blepharitis. The moist heat helps unplug oil glands (Meibomian glands) and slows tear evaporation for fast acting relief. This is particularly important with evaporative dry eye conditions in order to keep eyes naturally lubricated. The doctors may also recommend omega 3 supplementation as a primary therapy in evaporative dry eye disease.

Regular use of the Bruder Eye Hydrating Compress can help dryness from reoccurring.

How it Works:

Bruder Moist compresses feature patented Medibeads that continuously absorb and store water molecules from the air. When heated, the absorbed water is released as clean and soothing moist heat.

Benefits:
  • Replenish Moisture
  • Refresh Eyes
  • Relieve Dryness
  • Reduce Inflammation
  • Improve Meibomian Oil Gland Production
  • Treat many types of eye irritations
  • Safe for frequent use
  • Self-hydrating – no need to add water
  • Anti-bacterial and non-allergenic
  • Washable and reusable.

Preservative-free Moisturizers

Preservative-free artificial tears and moisturizers represent the organics of topical dry eye therapy. This reduces the potential for ocular surface and corneal side effects that may be inherent in preserved eye drops. The Optometrists at UTEC create a customized moisturizing regimen for each patient’s individual needs.

Thealoz®

Thealoz® is a preservative and phosphate free, pH neutral aqueous solution eyedrop used for dry eye treatment and management. It’s main ingredient is trehalose, a natural substance present in many plants and animals that are able to survive in extremely dry conditions. Trehalose has properties that enable protection of the eyes and stabilisation of cell membranes on the corneal epithelium.

HYLO artificial tears

HYLO artifical tears is Health Canada approved as a Class 2 medical device for ocular lubrication. HYLO is a preservative and phosphate free eye drop that contains the sodium salt of hyaluronic acid; a substance found naturally in the eye and other parts of the body. HYLO is offered in the world’s first preservative free, multi-dose container and is suitable for all ages as well as hard or soft contact lens wearers.

Regular use of the Bruder Eye Hydrating Compress can help dryness from reoccurring.

Features and Benefits:
  • Long lasting dry eye relief
  • Well tolerated (even after Lasik, cataract surgery or keratoplasty)
  • Preservative-free, Phosphate-free
  • Guaranteed sterility for 6 months after first use
  • 300 sterile doses – 1 drop at a time!

I-DROP® PUR/GEL

I-DROP PUR is recommended for patients diagnosed with mild, moderate or severe chronic dry eye syndrome looking for the ultimate relief and comfort for their dry eyes.

What Are The Benefits Of Using I-DROP® PUR?
  • Preservative-Free
  • Immediate and longer-lasting relief
  • Superior comfort
  • Non-blurring upon application
  • Lower therapy costs due to the need for less applications
  • Contact Lens compatible
What Makes I-DROP® PUR Unique?
  • The Viscoadaptive property of I-DROP® PUR contains 0.18%-0.30% HA with added glycerin. This formulation allows the drops to move back and forth across the surface of the eye with every blink, allowing for a longer residence time. It offers a higher hydration capability and stabilizes the lipid layer of the tear film, resulting in superior comfort to the patient.
  • The one-way valve dispenses 1 sterile dosed drop at a time (no wasted product) and eliminates any chance of the product re-entering the bottle. An anti-bacterial tip ensures safe, sterile delivery of each drop. When the drop is dispersed, there is a distinctive blue tip which facilitates “aiming” by the patient.
